Promoting Colon Cancer Screening in the African-American Community

March is National Colon Cancer Awareness month. The Colon Cancer Alliance has dedicated March to bring awareness to this important health topic. Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States. Now's the time to brush up on the facts about colon cancer and encourage your patients to get tested.

AUDIO

In this podcast, Dr. Stephen B. Thomas, Professor, Health Service Administration Director, Maryland Center for Health Equity discusses how African-Americans have a higher death rate from colon cancer but lower screening rates. He shares an innovative collaboration between University of Maryland and The Cigna GroupSM Foundation to promote cancer screening in the African-American community through outreach in Black barber and beauty shops in Prince George's County, Maryland. Learn how barbers and beauticians are being trained to become lay health advocates, and are transforming their barber and beauty shops - a trusted source of information in the African-American community - into health information portals.
